"Vacation" while unemployed means "sponging off visiting my parents in California" for two weeks.

Given the tendency of pounds to flee in terror in the presence of The World's Greatest Weight Watcher, I am unsuprised to have lost five and a half pounds over Thanksgiving. Mom's not judging my second portions, she just taught Captain America his Disappointed Face, despite being some 20 years too young.

Dad is 94, not 95, and has finally had his driving privileges revoked except for every morning when he gets the paper.

Tiger, their cat, has either through age or overeating lost the ability to jump up on the HE washing machine, even for treats. My money's on overeating, since he still jumps on everything else not involving a narrow ledge en route.

Parents managed to confine themselves to thoughtful, hella pointed observations in lieu of lectures, for which I am grateful and of which I am very proud. I only had to turn 55 for it to happen!

Other than creeping old age, all is well at the family homestead.

Also, I discovered trekking poles. They make all the difference!

Is dismissing the little "time to work...38 mins" (down to 26 mins as time goes on) that Google sends me. zzzzpGONE.

Also, tumblr surfing. someone asked Mackie and Evans which Disney princesses they would be. Mackie = Cinderella because she's broke and Evans = Belle because bookish and not into Gaston, which got me thinking about which Disney princess I'd be.

Belle is a front runner based on bookishness and wolf whacking in the snow. (Never gratuitous wolf whacking, of course; only the threatening wolves.)

Aurora based on my current, fighting a cold before Dragoncon, sleep tendencies is making a showing.

Cinderella put up with some shit and stayed cool. I like that in a girl, especially since I'm having more trouble than I thought I would emulating it.

If not for the dinglehopper incident (trying a little too hard to fit in,) my fellow swimmy Ariel would be right up there. But. Dinglehopper incident. Also, sellout for a man. Yeah, no.

Merida? She's a redhead, I'm a redhead. She's a Scot, I have Scottish tendencies. Prima facie...no, wait. Remember that scene during the archery contest for who gets to date Merida? When her mother is going don't you dare? And Merida does this look and looses the fooking arrow more or less in Mom's face?

Yeah. I'm Merida.

No one has informed my (step)sister of this.

I have just returned from two weeks in California visiting the parental units over the Fourth of July and celebrating my (step)father's 93rd birthday. (Step)sister and daughter were there to help out. Things were going swimmingly and this post was shaping up to be "what a marvelous blended family we make!" when my mother told me that my father told her that sister told him she thought it would be a good idea for sister to be the sole executor of the estate so she could "take care of" my mother because we wouldn't want to leave anything complicated and financial in justalurkr's hands, now would we?

Quick family history beneath the cut )

Since I'm pretty sure (step)sister wouldn't spit on Mom were Mom on fire, I have to assume that (step)sister fundamentally misunderstands (a) what it is an executor does; (b) the exact nature of the estate trust in question and why both of us have executor roles; or (c) the likelihood anything will be left of said estate when Mom passes, given how long-lived the women in our line of descent tend to be.

Possibly more than anyone wants to know about the estate under the cut )

I've always assumed there would be nothing left and I or the State would be supporting Mom in her extreme old age, depending on which of us had more money. The real punchline to this whole thing is that (step)sister's daughter is pretty much my sole heir, so whatever's left of the parents' and my estate eventually goes to (step)sister's side of the family anyway, given that the only one of my half siblings by blood who has children has gone on record as not wanting anything to do with our father's first family (or, Mom and I.) The son is already gone and the younger sister is gay and not looking to reproduce (as of now.)

In other news, the niece ran four pounds off my broad rear view and I am now a geocacher. Not that I've found anything yet, but STILL. I'm a geocacher.

The one I never actually announced I was going on? My cruise was outstanding, barring a one-night test of how good a sailor I am (very, was the answer.) I went wine tasting in Santa Barbara (link is to the only winery whose name I remember which also happened to be the first we visited DON'T JUDGE ME,) visited a wild animal sanctuary in San Diego, saw the Queen Mary in Long Beach and got a hot stone massage instead of going ashore in Ensenada, Mexico.

My parents' cruise, on the other hand, sucked mightily. That first excursion to the four wineries, only one of which I remember clearly enough to get a name? Santa Barbara is a tender port for Princess, which for the uninitiated means you have to take a boat into port from the ship. Mom slipped and fell on the tender gangway, but gamely rode the tender into port before discovering she for serious and for real couldn't put weight on the same hip she damaged years ago in a wreck when at age 60, she was deemed too young for a hip replacement and pinned back together willy-nilly.

Long story short, we know as of this morning that the fall fractured the hip, which was not visible in the X-ray taken by the ship's doctor, and moving between the bed and bathroom on board completed the journey to fully broken hip. On the ship, still thinking it was a deep soft tissue injury, Mom spent most of the time in bed with mostly Frank and occasionally me waiting on her hand and foot.

The biggest favor her doctor could do himself is to tell her she's still too young at 74 for a hip replacement after the ordeal they put her through in the hospital this morning, best summed up by my mother snapping "don't you people talk to each other??" At least they warned me before my eye surgery that everyone would be asking me the same questions to avoid errors.

Why did I have fun on my cruise while my parents were experiencing the tortures of the nautically damned? Because they threatened to throw me overboard if someone didn't have fun, and they could both teach stubborn to a mule.

I am currently in non-sunny Northern California, visiting for my mother's 73rd birthday and appear to have brought the (desperately needed) rain with me. I'm actually okay with California rain; it's delicate and cool, unlike Georgia buckets or Florida palmetto pounders. Also, despite the fact that my dad is outdoing himself with a week of birthday dinners in and out of the house (though not at In and Out Burgers,) I'm still losing weight because of the portion control and exercise thing.

I officially weight 30 pounds more than my svelte 73 year old mom. That is WRONG and must be corrected.

Iam not here.Seriously. I'm in lacerville,CA, until New Year's eve, posting from my Blackberry, eating cranberry relish and getting berry scented massages at the local day spa. I (heart) my Christmas vacation. Of course, I am now two weeks behind on SGA porn. If you would care to perform one last charitable act for 2006, please comment withlinks to the best stories you've seen go up since 0december 15 to cushion the blow on Sunday of returning to a world of cooking my own food, rubbing my own feet and maidservanting two cats. The world is just a better place when I am well porned. Altenatively, the bitterly envious among you can pre-emptively attempt to top the "I flew through Denver Interational right after a snowstOrm" horror story I will no doubt be working on. I druther have the porn, tho. :)
