Welcome back Spammikins!
They brought the woman back under the oiliest possible Sammy the Wonderhorse Saves The Day circumstances, didn't they? The 'ship has sunk, we're getting back to Samantha Carter's soldier/scientist roots, so that must mean All Carter To The Rescue, All The Time.
Has Sammy suffered contamination by Medusa's genetic debris? Stuck her finger in a lightsocket? Experienced the final revenge of the weedwhacker? Where'n'HELL is the USAF guy who mandated the post-S4 haircut? I swear that woman's hair was in some different, yet still unattractive disarray in every single scene.
Was it just me, or was every single shot that contained both Claudia Black and Amanda Tapping blocked to minimize interaction between the two? Did anyone keep count of the number of times we were reminded that Vala is just there until the bacelet effects wore off and was otherwise useless to anyone for anything? Did Sam's "she did it!" when Vala did more or less what Sam said had to be done have to sound so shocked? Vala, Stealer of Ships, Overcomer of Entire Prometheus Crews, is no slouch in the emergency improv department.
Why does Sam Carter have to be so perfectly perfect?
In other news, You GO, Lou Gossett, Jr.! That was pithy. :D
I'm available for Daniel Jackson's next sponge bath and rubdown. 24X7 availability, here. Oh, yes. Warm towels, scented soaps, fresh water. Call me!
The visit from Futurama's Hedonism-bot was pleasant. Can we get him back soon? He was fun!
General Hank Landry is really, really working for me. He'll work better when he stops sucking up to Sammy the Wonderhorse, but they pretty much made him do that. [smacks writers]
The band is back together? The Boys at Bridge are on their knees, PLEADING for the hatred of Jack fans, are they? Giving two dollar blow jobs to anyone who will wring that extra, added fillip of loathing for Cameron Mitchell from Those Who Miss Jack? Idiots. Never, ever will they learn.
Supergate. Heh. I liked that. Extra Deluxe Ginormous Slot Machine Package, there. Yea verily, the Mary Sue of Stargate hardware. The twirly-girl in Atlantis will be SO pissed.
Question: if Stargates only transmit in one direction, how is it possible Vala is still alive in the Ori galaxy? Doesn't it make better sense that it would have been set up to send ships here, rather than transmit there? Or is every Stargate two-way on its first series appearance? [wave to Apophis in "Children of the Gods," here.]
A bit discursive, but not too much cursing. ;)

Date: 2005-08-20 10:14 pm (UTC)I thought the "conversation" between Landry and Jack was vile, from this end. Yeah, Carter's pulled their asses out of the fire a few times...she's also not the one to have come up with all the ass-pulling ideas. Everyone else is chopped liver and worthless except Spammikins when it comes to world-saving ideas.
I'm still making my mind up about this episode. It had some rockin' effects, and the creation of that supergate was one helluva idea -- but, um, would a miniblackhole made up of a small rocky planet that size have enough mass to creat a blackhole, and then power a huge gate like that for more than a few minutes?
And what about the Jaffa living on the planet? Noone seemed to give a shit or mention them at all once they made their first few appearances.
I think the Ori might be a lot smarter if -- remember a couple of episodes back, Daniel tells the Senator that there are still thousands of addresses that the SGC hasn't checked out, and that there might be some allies on those planets? Well, it would be smarter if the Ori went to the planets the SGC *has not* gone to, and established their populations of worshippers at *those* planets. So that when the SGC does start exploring again, well, gee, look who's been there first, and longest!
More personally, I think the way Carter was introduced as Wonder Carter once again, with the General foaming at the mouth with excessive drool -- frankly, that's the way he should have been acting with *Daniel*, in the beginning. I mean, there's the dude who opened the Stargate, fcol. Here's the guy who brokered many treaties with other races, like the Nox, one can presume, and the Land of Light, etc and others.
I dunno, I have a bad taste in my mouth now about Carter's return. Unless she gets a Fall, like Rodney in Atlantis, because she's been set up as the Woman who Knows All and Saves Collective Asses, she's just going to be a bitch to me. No one likes a character who's flawless and goody-two-shoes. And frankly, Tapping can't carry it off. Whatever her view is of her character, she just doesn't seem to have the ability to make her views come to life. She comes across as self-involved and witchy and self-satisfied. Her and her character.

Date: 2005-08-20 10:50 pm (UTC)Carter appeared to have a bad taste in her mouth most of the time she was on screen. There needs to be some exposition PDQ about what's been up with Sam in Area 51 and Jack in Washington that will explain Landry's side of the phone calls, the budget, and why the people who know Sam best keep being all evasive about why she's not burning to rejoin the team.

Date: 2005-08-20 10:56 pm (UTC)Carter would be going back to an SG-1 she is not leading, where although she's up on a pedestal put there by her new commanding officer, she has farther to fall with Sir to catch her...where she realizes that unless Daniel joins up too, she's fresh out of her idea world-saving generator.
How're those reasons?

Date: 2005-08-20 10:17 pm (UTC)LMNT couldn't get it done...Vala had to DO her job for her. I could just FEEL the tension when NO ONE was listening to her, both in re: backstabbing Goa'uld AND SuperGate.
(Gate voices just chimed in with a SERIOUS b!tchfest...)
AND...
SHAFT! Mitchell's call-sign is SHAFT!
Could they have HANDED the slashers anything more PERFECT? *claps happily* *BIG GRIN*

Date: 2005-08-21 12:18 am (UTC)I still say she was in a freak accident at Area 51, and her hair is now a living entity bent on world domination. Or at least putting out someone's eye.
Was it just me, or was every single shot that contained both Claudia Black and Amanda Tapping blocked to minimize interaction between the two?
Wasn't just you. I'd love to hear what new fans who tuned in this season just to see Ben and/or Claudia think about this turn of events. To them, Sam is the ursurper. Will they accept her? They're not seeing all the baggage the rest of us do, so maybe that will help.
Why does Sam Carter have to be so perfectly perfect?
Mary SueSam has all the writers hypnotized with her hair or something.Question: if Stargates only transmit in one direction, how is it possible Vala is still alive in the Ori galaxy? The whole bit about the ubergate didn't make much sense to me. If they're using a black hole, wouldn't that raise issues with time dilation and the like? If not, I'll get a memo out to Major Boyd of SG-10, currently stranded on P3W-451 next door to a black hole, to let him know it was a clerical error and his team should head on home.
