Last night's "Supernatural"
Apr. 25th, 2008 06:18 amOkay, so I've been watching Supernatural all catty-wampus, catching up with the first season a little at a time, missing the second season, and watching the third season more or less as it airs.
As a result, I have no clue who Ed and Harry are, though that didn't stop me from near-loss of containment in the first three minutes of the recorded episode this morning. (I also like CSI. Sue me.)
So- before I watch the rest of last night's ep, where have we seen these guys before, so I can see if I've got a copy and can skip to it before watching this? There's clearly a history there.
Ghostfacers????? omgwtfbbqgiblets!
Please be aware spoilers are also likely in the comments, thanks!

Date: 2008-04-25 02:11 pm (UTC)You did catch their full names, right? Harry Spangler and Ed Zeddmore, which sounds an awful lot like Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddmore, as in "Who you gonna call?!"
This is one of those love/hate episodes. Fans either love it or hate it, especially those in the slashy end of the fandom pool. Some don't like it when the gay aspect is used as a punchline like it was here. Eh, I've seen worse. It wasn't the best ever, but it wasn't awful either. I loved they could put in the language and Dean flipping people off, even if it was just so they could bleep and blur it due to the nature of the show.
I remembered Spengler
Date: 2008-04-26 02:24 pm (UTC)I totally get that this is one of those episodes where we ask "are they laughing with us or at us?" But by adding the layer of Ghosthunter parody, I think they kept to the side of with us. I also felt they handled the gay thing less as a punchline than as, well, a plot point. There are boy-crushes out there, and the way Ed or Harry (whom I cannot keep sorted in my head) handled it was about as respectful as can be expected in a parody episode. I don't know very many straight boys who would go be gay for that poor, dead intern immediately after the penny dropped.
For cryin' out loud, Bridge is too homophobic to allow guy-on-guy CPR. We've seen bunches worse that an ew, gay reaction handled in a totally non-verbal way and lasting a remarkably brief period of time.
Plus, I have a hard time believing Ghosthunters is as popular as it's turned out to be. Fans of that show may have a hard time seeing the humor in a parody this broad.

I wonder what will happen to the group now? They lost all of their video evidence, but will they continue working on the show, but with more focus because they've seen the real deal now? Basically let the show pay for their travels but use it as a cover for really hunting down ghosts and other paranormal stuff a la Sam and Dean.
We saw in the "Ghostfacers" bit that the boys gave them their number to contact them, which is something I think the boys should have been doing for a while -- making contacts with others who've realized there's Somthing Out There. There does seem to be an information network amongst the hunters, but those folks tend to be off the grid. Keeping in contact with those who're still out in the general public would be a good idea.
But that phone number thing was before the boys set off an EMP, so there might not be any love there. Though it could be fun for there to be a meet-up later on, but not in another comedy episode. Have the Ghostfacers (mostly) know what they're doing, though still in their dorkish, fumbling way. Wouldn't that knock Sam and Dean (especially Dean) for a loop to realize they've got protégés?
