Torchwood 2X13 Exit Wounds [SPOILERS]
Apr. 13th, 2008 01:39 pmWell, I'm just going to ask a question about the episode. If answered, the comments will be butt-deep in spoilers.
Do the folks who follow Torchwood fandom & gossip have any insight as to what brought on that clear-out of the Torchwood cast? That episode could have doubled as a series finale (in the American sense)...did they think they weren't getting renewed? did they not get renewed? Is Torchwood, God forbid, about to be re-invented or, even worse, re-imagined?

Date: 2008-04-13 07:23 pm (UTC)I have read some things talking about the third season being a go, including an interview with Burn Gorman essentially saying a variation of the old "nobody dies in sci fi" rule. IIRC, before the finale he'd made comments about appearing in season three, which made a lot of people dismiss later rumors that Owen would die for real in the finale.
I don't have a link handy for those comments, but I do have this link to an interview with Naoko Mori about her exit.
One persistant rumor I keep hearing is they'll bring Martha Jones back as pemanant medic for Torchwood 3. That one's not terribly surprising really, based on her earlier appearance on the show.
The other rumor, I'll admit was a bit more headscratching for me. There's been talk of bringing in Mickey Smith as their tech person. If they brought in Martha and Mickey, they'd still have the same male/female balance among the cast, and still keep the same roles of medic and tech.
I kept dismissing that idea because Mickey's in an alternate dimension (quite happy with his boyfriend, Jake, thank you very much *g*) and the door has been closed between that dimension and our own. Why go to the trouble of undoing that plot point just to bring Mickey back instead of bringing in a new character? But if you've seen the season opener of the latest season of Doctor Who, the closing of the door might not be exactly final anyway, so maybe Mickey will be back.
I've got mixed feelings about this. I like Martha, as long as she's not pining after the Doctor. I like Mickey, once he got out of the "tin dog" stage and stopped waiting around for whenever Rose deigned to give him any attention. But this would make three out of five members of Torchwood Cardiff ex-companions of the Doctor, and I'm not sure I like that idea. I want Torchwood to stand on its own, not be a reunion home for the Doctor's companions.
I'd rather see them bring in someone from UNIT (like Martha currently is) or maybe even recruit someone who survived Canary Wharf (like Ianto) than keep recycling characters. But RTD's shows seem to have a penchant for recycling characters, sometimes with slight tweaks, or at least reusing names.
I don't think the show will be reinvented or reimagined. Retooled? Maybe. But hopefully somewhat along the lines of changes from season one to season two which toned down the emo and ramped up the fun, while still leaving gaping plotholes -- but you just didn't care because you were having too much fun.
I know a lot of fans are worried the show will be "kiddified" next season, if they add in Martha and Mickey full-time. We American fans forget that Doctor Who is a British show aimed at kids/family. Over the years a huge portion of the adult audience watching were the kids who grew up on it, but still, it's intending for a younger set.
I know there was talk when Torchwood started about it being for adults and they didn't plan to have Doctor Who characters beyond Captain Jack crossover because they didn't want kids frustrated they couldn't watch those characters on the other show. We already know how that went, so maybe they will "kiddify" things somewhat, but even then, it will be more adult-oriented than most American shows, especially those of a sci fi variety.

Date: 2008-04-13 07:52 pm (UTC)I heard Torchwood is being retooled and that they are hoping to make it more "family friendly" while Doctor Who is off air.
