Okay, so I've seen a big two season 3 episodes of "Supernatural," but I have formed an Opinion. (You knew that was coming, I hope? :D)

So, I've seen the episode where Sam shoots the crossroads demon, followed by the one with Bela. Is it just me, or is season 3 more focused on how the brothers interact with hot chicks other people than on how they get on together? Had the writers tired themselves out on family drama by that point, or what?

Bela was nothing short of annoying. Why doesn't she count as an evil force that must be destroyed by doughty Winchesters? She sells body parts for cash, for crying out loud.

Sam still needs a haircut and Dean is, like, sculpturally gorgeous.

Have you seen the other 'kick-ass' woman they added this year? I can't remember which eps she's been in, but anyhoo, between her and Bela...well, my guess is that TPTB were under pressure to appeal to the holy grail of demographics: horny teen boys. It sucks but I've honed the selective viewing part of my brain so I don't really see them ;-)

And god, yes, I wish Sam would cut that damn hair.

Just a trim! Ends sticking everywhere just looks juvenile.

I guess horny middle-aged women with money to burn weren't enough for them. When o when will PTB learn?

I've seen Jo's name in crossover fic, but have yet to see her onscreen. Sometimes I wonder if the 'kick-ass' chick is meant to appeal to young women? Give them someone to identify with? I mean, is she really hooking up with either brother? In the little fanfiction I've read, she's quite comfortably in the kid-sister context.

Jo isn't the one referred to. ;)

It frightens me when people say that. I infer that the SPN PTB have been going through kick-ass chicks in that pitifully desperate (and usually doomed) effort to create chemistry where there is none.

Jo is Ellen's daughter, and I suspect a failed attempt at kick ass girl (who pines for Dean) but really is more the little sis. (Have you met Ellen? You have to meet Ellen. And Bobby. Bobby is total love)

Ruby is the other new chick. I suppose it's possible that they want the new chicks to bring in the young women...except I suspect the young women are already watching for Sam and Dean. Besides, it's always Ruby & Sam and Dean & Bela. Having been burned before, I'm suspicious. Hey, you know--you've been there too.

Nope, just up to Hookman (1x07)

Has there ever, in the history of genre TV, been a main character/introduced character combination that actually clicked, worked and raised ratings?

Okay, maybe Buffy and Angel, but he was introduced early and spun off pretty quickly. Their love was tragic and distant. That works for me.

*sigh*

Season 3...is not what the last two were in terms of Sam-and-Dean-til-the-end-of-the-world, but the moments where it is about that... *shuts up before I spoil*

Thanks!

[pets you] The little spoilers don't bother me, but the great big "I am your father, Luke," ones do, which is why I should avoid wikipedia. There's a deal in play for Dean's future I should probably not have read about, but I wouldn't have understood the situation with the crossroads demon or what's so worrisome about Sam's...uh, here I go, about to spoil. ;)

FYI, while I am up to date on eps aired thusfar, I am completely 100% spoilerfree. So basically, you spoil me, I throw pointy objects at your head.

Now, now. When I have ever posted an uncut spoiler? I know people feel strongly about that!

Anyway, if you're caught up, not a lot of chances for me to spoil you, as I'm not a big chaser of the things. If [livejournal.com profile] nialla42 is about to bust if she doesn't share, I listen. ;)

You're not wrong on the whole "hot chicks" thing. From what I can tell, they're part of a deal with Satan the network. Renewal wasn't a sure thing, but the network wanted hot babes (because we know the only thing that gets people watching a show is T&A), so TPTB added not one, but two.

TPTB deny they're supposed to be the focus of the stories or love interests for the boys, but gee, two boys, two girls, and they're paired off in storylines... yeah, sure, right they're not love interests.

I guess none of the network dweebs is old enough to remember "Moonlighting," the Cybill Shepherd/Bruce Willis detective hour whose only mystery was eventually "will they or won't they?"

Is the USS Sam'n'Jack deemed to be so successful it must be cloned across all genre TV? [weeps]

I honestly don't think it's ever been all that successful. UST might be, but you can only string viewers on for so long. Writers can't figure out how to wright good RST though -- happy couples aren't dramatic.

Bela needs to be salted and burned. Preferably as soon as possible. I think the network has some blackmail material over the producers, or maybe the one female writer they lost to that Lifetime vampire show kept the rest of them focused and sane. Because they have lost focus in third season.

Not beyond hope, though. I firmly believe that the writer's strike came at the right time to save the show from itself. I guess we'll see... :)

Worst case scenario: everyone gets naked with a girl in the comeback episode, and the camera is pointed over a Winchester shoulder.

Best case scenario: The girls all form a support group, realize that rogue demon hunters constitute toxic love, and move on. Kick-ass genre chicks are dim that way, after all. ;)

I'm still catching up on S2, but I've sene all of S3 so far. I am in the minority where the female additions don't annoy me very much. I prefer episodes focused on the brothers, but adding people doesn't get me angry out put out. That's just me though.

Of the two women added to season 3, Bela makes the least amount of sense, though. I see her as basic comic relief *shrugs*

I guess it was the contrast between the close focus on the Winchester family in S1 to the brothers barely having more interaction with everyone else than with each other that sent my antennae up. Of course, two eps might not be a fair sample.
