...were I so dead to all sense of reality as to sign up for an AU ficathon that features the SGA team in, say, the Xenaverse, and I needed to explain Rodneus's Rodney's citrus allergy as the revenge of a pissed off god(dess,) which would it be? To whom was the lemon or other citrus sacred in ancient Greece or Rome (since Rodneus is Roman?)

Also, could Ronon pass for a Persian, which would make him one of the most hated, feared and above all, hunted men in Greece?

How about Demeter? The Greek earth goddess who brings forth the fruits of the earth, particularly the various grains?

Or Pomona, Roman goddess of fruit trees?

Agrarian as they are and machine-oriented as Rodney is, that makes sense.

In response to "lemon sacred to," Google returned Venus and Diana, which suggested a very interesting deus ex machina. (For some reason, Google only occurs to me after I've pestered my flist.)

Might work with Pomona, though, as Ares and Mars are going to mix it up at some point.

Ares: [shows his ass in a typically Arean manner I haven't worked out yet]
Rodneus McKaius: [sniffs] Mars is so much better.
Mars: [is smug]
Ionnes: Rodney, that's Ares! Dressed in a toga!
Ronon al-Dex: That mean they're both ball-less wonders?
Teyla: [mutters something about men or plumbing or maybe both]

I don't think Ronan could pass for a Persian though.

I figured as much. I've decided that my author's note (or disclaimer) will include the information that I'm adhering to the same exacting standards of historical accuracy, linguistic integrity and story continuity as the pro writers of Xena: Warrior Princess, and to the same rigid expectation of plot originality as the writers at Bridge Studios.

Good lord, I can get away with anything!

(well, or just the fact that Ronon is Persian [or maybe just suspected of same,] Galen, Daedalus and Greek Fire are contemporaneous, and a plot that is the bastard lovechild of two Xena episodes in which the Amazons pick fights.)

Or....since Ronon is foreign, he could be suspected of being Persian. That actually works better. If he really were, the good Greeks on the team would pretty much have to hunt him, too. If I recall the plot of 300 correctly (doubtful, as I was there to watch 300 nearly naked men doing nearly naked manly things;) Greeks and Persians were unalterably implacable enemies.

Hee! Yes! You're writing it!

Hmm... Ronon in the Xenaverse could easily be explained with no explanation at all - remember Draco with the mohawk? I think there was at least one or two with dreds as well (Borias at some point?). Maybe it was rumored he tried to work for the Persians, but they thought he was too violent or couldn't be controled (which, ha!).

Rodney could have even just pissed off a random dryad and been cursed to never eat the fruit from her trees again, or something like that if you don't want an actual god or goddess involved.

It's the Xenaverse - anything is possible, and likely.

Again, hee!

Y'know, a dryad is much more likely to leave it at an allergy. Diana killed someone just for seeing her naked; triggering a citrus allergy would mean she was in a good mood that day. Venus seems far more likely to curse the lovelife of anyone who made her mad.

Dryad of an orange or kumquat tree might do it, though there's a deus ex machina that goes wanting. Ah well. Enough drama between the gods of war without dragging the rest of the pantheon into it!

I was trying to work a way to get a Pacific Islander to Ancient Greece with some level of credibiiity--just leaving it at "foreign, ergo suspicion to the ignorant" might be the way to go!

While I haven't written anything beyond story notes, I'm thinking really hard. :D Does that count?

Stroke of genius, btw, for an SGA/XWP fusion (or crossover, which I seem to recall being your original suggestion. I'm just afraid Xena and Teyla and Gabrielle would disappear discreetly and never come back!)

Current parallels in characterization thus far:

1. Rodney is much sought after for bad guys for his understanding of Greek Fire (a napalm-like weapon unique to Byzantine Greeks much later in history, but XENAVERSE RULES OF HISTORICAL ACCURACY!) a citrus allergy and a prescription mattress special bedding designe for him by Galen. Plus, he thinks Daedalus is a lack-wit HACK.

2. John has parents (Ares and maybe Alti, except she might be evil; wouldn't want to double dip) he doesn't want to talk about (or to) and a burning desire to fly.

3. Teyla is estranged from her people while seeking a way to protect them. (An Amazon seeking help from a man? That's not going to play well in Amazon Peoria.)

4. Ronon is hunted and on the run as he seeks out a way to defend his people. (This is pretty much why I was looking for a people for him--Greece is a long way to go for a Pacific Islander. He'll have heard about "Rodneus" and the Greek Fire thing from Rodney's loose-tonged cousin, Salmoneus, or maybe the "I get around" Autolycus.)

There's [livejournal.com profile] briar_pipe's bar fight, then they all light out after John, who has more or less abducted Rodney for the purpose of extracting wings, with Teyla after him to help out her small, isolated band of Amazons and Ronon wanting to (a) take a number for Rodney and get the GF and (b) figure out Teyla's fighting style. Oh, and that John guy is kinda hot. I see Ronon as something of an OT4 catalyst, you see. He strikes me as the man most likely to instigate a hot, life-affirming fourgy without talking it to death.

Psst... Don't use the Roman names if you're basing it in Greece, they tend to get pissed off at that. :) Diana = Artemis (kinda, Diana was more war/battle and Artemis was more hunter).

1) Daedalus is *so* a half-wit. And, Xenaverse rules of accuracy = close enough, get over it.

2) I'd say yes to Ares (or possibly Strife, or maybe even Discord if you want an evil mom and still a tie to Ares), but I don't see Alti with Ares - she was too self-serving and power-hungry, and he only really rewarded people who worked for him.

3) Teyla looking for a way to help her people works. Is she secretly working on a mission from her Queen, who doesn't want her name tied to needing help from men?

4) Ronon looking to defend his people works. Does he know whether or not his people are safe anymore? Is he certain they still exist/need help after all that time? It definitely works as a drive for him, but does he ever question it (angst?).

Heh. Ronon as a catalyst (almost typed it as "catalust"). I could so see him as a, "Dude, you're hot, wanna go make out?" type of guy as well as a "We can do more together than apart" type guy.

Looking forward to reading this.

It's early here

That reply was riddled with typos, the most egregious of which should have been:

1. Rodney is much sought after by bad guys

and

2. Alti might be too evil, wouldn't want to double-dip.
