Meta: The Idiots Guide to BNFdom

I'm already a sockpuppet for [livejournal.com profile] orange852, but am considering going freelance. Any BNFs out there recruiting for their Sockpuppet Armies? :D

Big Name Fan? I don't know no Big Name Fans. I know a few people who WANTED to be a BNF (or think they are, in their own minds), but if you want to be a sockpuppet BNF fan, that's alright by me!

(and in what fandom, btw?)

;-)

I'm the most enthusiastic about SGA these days, but I still Know Some People over in TS. OK, so most of them look blank when they hear the handle I used over there, but I still Know Some People!

One could argue there is a fine line between BNF and wanting to be a BNF...

And I still know people who are trying.

Oh yeah. Well, c'mon. It's really not that surprising the number of folks in fandom who want to be BNFs. Normally, they're powerless in their RL (tho don't quote me on that, I don't have anything to back that up), or have a colorless life, or need that PowerSurge (tm) that comes with being Known and Respected. Like minor celebrity. Its like getting to be a star without going through the necessary crap that actors have to go through to get where they are.

And who wouldn't want adulation on some level or other?

Heh.

I think the last and only true Big Name Fan that I can think of, who really made an impact in her fandom, was Bjo Trimble of Original Star Trek fame. She put out a compendium. Helped spearhead the writing campaign, and was *everywhere* when the first conventions were being planned and run. And she personally knew Roddenberry and others in the crew and cast.

Fans since then? They're only dreaming.

I always use the Cassie Claire example as my benchmark. That one never ceases to amaze me.

But you're right. I can't speak for everyone who wants to be a BNF or who is considered one, but the behavior still speaks to that core need that people have. I do believe that many people feel insignificant in life and this is the way to feel important. It makes sense.

But there's the day you wake up and realize that you're just wasting your time. If you want to be a success, do something. That's the way I feel anyway.

And, while I somewhat understand the urge, those people are very, very sad.

Actually, I think Orange and Justa are two heads on the same body.

Maybe, but...
