(Paraphrased because no one has put it up on Goodreads yet and I have been listening to the book.)

There is a gathering of four people.
Our Scientist: I'm calling this Project Elrond.
Press Lady: Eh?
Scientist 1: That's why we're meeting in secret?
Press lady: No, really...eh?
Scientist 2: To make a momentous decision?
Press lady: WTF?
Our Scientist: (explains Council of Elrond)
Press lady: NONE of you got laid in high school, did you?

It's partly quoted at GoodReads.

“Elrond,” Bruce said. “The Council of Elrond. From Lord of the Rings. It’s the meeting where they decide to destroy the One Ring.”

“Jesus,” Annie said. “None of you got laid in high school, did you?”

Venkat is cool, but Annie is my favorite from the Earth crew. Knowing what you're about to broadcast will be replayed in every retelling of the story forevermore, amen, and getting your ass up on the podium anyway is a level of moxie to which I can only aspire.

I liked Venkat just because it was nice to get a non-white, non-Christian character for a change. I think it's also more reflective of NASA, which is no longer the bastion of white dudes as it was during the Apollo era.

Though I do wonder how long Watney's story will be remembered in detail. Look at Apollo 13, where the average person might be able to name the astronauts involved, and maybe the mission control officer, but that's about it as far as people are concerned. But it is a new era, and while NASA does an awesome job of releasing information about missions and educational info, anyone with an internet connection can preserve the story however they want.

But here's the real question: Will there be Watney RPF/RPS back on earth? ;)

OF COURSE THERE WILL

Unless, of course, Andy Weir's Earth is devoid of fangirls, in which case, how unrealistic is that?

There's only two fics over at AO3 at the moment and not one is porny, but I expect that to vastly increase after the movie. I'm really curious to see how the shipping divide comes down, because some will ship based on the book, and others by the actors. ::ahem::
