"Do electronics know when we don't love them anymore?"
Emphasizing the recent wonkiness of my ASUS Nexus 7. Baby, when that bezel goes, it's allll over. Solution: BUY A CHROMEBOOK ON WOOT.COM FOR 40% OFF.

"Who knew fedex had a six to eight day ground delivery option? SRSLY?"
No, really. What's the point of FedEx with any delivery deadline than overnight???? WANT MY CHROMEBOOK

"Gotta stop watching woot.com, serious cash hole in my pocket."
Like, every time I log in to check the status of my meant-to-be first and only purchase, I am sorely tempted by "Today's Deal!" and am now a lady in waiting on a Scrubba wash bag. STOP JUDGNING ME. It doubles as a survival supply (my clothes will be clean in a grid-down situation because that's important) and maybe something really useful in the Czech Republic if I go (does the Czech Republic have laundromats?) WHERE IS MY CHROMEBOOK

"OUT FOR DELIVERY ... the three bestest words in the universe"
MY CHROMEBOOK IS COMING MY CHROMEBOOK IS COMING MY CHROMEBOOK IS COMING
IT'S HERE IT'S HERE IT'S HERE
(let the unboxing commence)

I've been using an HP Pavillion with a 17" screen and a touchscreen tablet, so the 11" keyboard on this little guy will take some getting used to, BUT I LOVES IT SO

Let me know how the Chromebook works out. I've been thinking about getting them for a mini-lab for the library if we get a grant, but I worry if it's too different in comparison to what most people are used to and they won't be able to translate those skills.

A lot translates. So much translates, in fact, that things that don't are really JARRING. (lame attempt at illustrative typography over.) Mostly, I miss my Home, End, page up/down and delete keys. I've figured out page up/down (alt+appropriate arrow key,) but Home and End elude me.

I already dig mousepads on an unusual (according to my coworkers) level, but one can attach a real mouse for those who don't. Using a mousepad with no buttons was new and exciting, though apparently Mac users will not have quite the learning curve I did. As I seem to recall most of your grants coming from the Gates people, you may be coaching how to click (especially to the two-finger right-click) a lot.

Also, while I have figured out how to make everything in the Chrome window big enough for old eyes, the stuff on the screen outside Chrome remains tiny. There's a screen magnifier, but YIKES. I'm not that old.

Yet.

That's my laundry list of quirks so far, other than getting used to Yet Another Sized Keyboard (did everything move one key to the right, or am I losing my mind???) it's pretty much business as usual for this Windows gal.

edited to add: I suppose this:

would have saved me some time yesterday.

My Window Netbook had a Fn key that you had to use in combination with other keys to do stuff like Page Up, Page Down, Home, and End. I'm please to see another old geezer who uses those. :)

Though for those who are using the library's computers and are not confident with the mouse (and then usually try to insist that I do it for them), I simply introduce them to the Page Up and Page Down keys and it solves a lot of problems.

I'm split on going Chrome, especially now that there's talk of one with a 15" screen coming soon. My goal with the lab is (1) to teach basic skills, and (2) specifically teach job searching skills (thankfully, our local Workforce Commission will help with that bit).

I'm thinking it would be a good thing for those who don't have a computer and might want to get a cheap and relatively easy to use one to use once they do get a job and can afford one. Though most of the actual job skills they'll need will be Windows oriented for the majority of them, so I'm not sure it will help in the general training part.
