Rodney! Woobie!
Shep! Woobie!
Sam! Dream freakin' on! You didn't hook up because, subconsciously, Rodney knew you were no more than a beard.
Rodney! Woobie! [it bears repeating :D]
Radek! Woobie!
It was totally the whale. I'd be disappointed that I just saw nothing more than a remix of Grace, except that DAVID HEWLETT ROCKS LIKE A GREAT BIG ADORKABLE ROCKING THING! as Stranded!Rodney and...um. Not bashing. No.

Date: 2005-12-15 04:13 am (UTC)David Hewlett does totally rock like a great big adorkable rocking thing, no doubt. I really liked seeing the Atlantis folks working on the rescue, especially Radek and John, who was practically screaming "Must. Save. My. Boyfriend!"
But from the moment Sam showed up, even knowing it was all in Rodney's head, it just irritated me. The character just makes my ass twitch these days, and not in the good way.
It's definitely a remix of Grace, but I do like the concept a bit better. The setup for that one left me wondering if the whole thing was in Sam's head (much like her love life), especially since it seemed so odd that everyone else was taken by the mysterious aliens and there's not been a peep about them since. It was an episode designed to highlight the character, but unfortunately... there's not all that much to highlight now.
I think there was a missed opportunity by not having Rodney literally talking to himself -- the pre-Atlantis bastard version -- instead of an avatar of himself in the form of Sam Carter, Science Wonder Princess. Or, like Grace, have Rodney dealing with people he knew to get some insight into how he feels about them. I know David could handle the challenge, but perhaps they didn't want to redux too much of Duet's acting challenges so soon. But of course it was more likely that it was an excuse to get a certain person wet dressed only in a bra. [sigh] And it wasn't Rodney. [double sigh]
I think the scenarios would have been wonderful if reversed a bit. Have Rodney dealing with people he knows, while having Sam dealing with Rodney egging her on about how she's not as smart as she thinks she is. Hindsight's 20/20 and all, but it's too bad Sam had to be in this episode in any form. I love Woobie!Rodney and this was a wonderful episode for him, but I'm not sure I can rewatch it because Sam annoys me to no end and it's kind of hard to edit her out of the episode by fast forwarding like I often do with SG-1 episodes.

Date: 2005-12-15 04:37 am (UTC)There was no technobabble from our Sammikins at all. She did everything she could to keep Rodney from hosing away resources he needed until the sea monster could attract the attention of the rescue shuttle. I'm thinking sea monster with a thing for ATA matched sets, as John was seeming especially inspired this week in areas of innovation he usually leaves to other people. What if the critter was talking to Atlantis, and they used their favorite boys' thoughts & memories to work out a rescue?
No Sam there at all!

Date: 2005-12-15 03:32 pm (UTC)Lassie being telepathic could be an interesting twist, which is why it wasn't used. Lassie did manage to let John and Radek know
Timmy had fallen down the wellwhere Rodney was by circling the area. Though perhaps there was an intention of the telepathic aspect, but much like the aliens in Grace, it was just skimmed over as not being important.I still wish they'd had a "Rodney versus Rodney" showdown, with our current version battling the older version. Rodney's still very pessimistic at times, but not nearly as much as he used to be. Would have been fun to watch old school Rodney sitting off to one side, berating his new self. Might have also helped with some of the Rodney naysayers too.
I do love that they showed John working on the rescue project so much, instead of just leaving it to others and then piloting the jumper. Reminded me of Rodney's comment in Aurora when he said he and Sheppard take turns saving each others' lives. Not too far from the truth.
Also, much love for Zelenka in this one. Especially after finding out that Rodney took the test flight because Radek was too scared too, then Radek has to really push his limits by going on the rescue mission. I like that they're using the character, but still showing that he's not quite ready for field work.
