Or, I am perhaps a paranoid dinosaur.
I heard this morning about Russia and China striking a deal for Russia to supply China with great gobs of natural gas.
1. Okay, good on China for moving away from coal.
2. OMG CHAOS WILL ENSUE.
Russia just proved they can sell natural gas other places besides Europe, meaning they can do more harm to Ukraine and anyone European giving Russia a hard time about helping itself to whatever former Soviet Socialist Republic with oil or a warm water port it cares to by cutting off supplies and the US can fold its sanctions into sharp cornered shapes and sit on them.
Maybe spin a little.
If China wants to get really nasty, it can pay for all of this natural gas and the infrastructure to go with it with...our money, held in the form of foreign debt.
All the Inner Cold Warrior can hear right now is "neener neener neener, containment only works once, Amerkinskies!"
edited to add: no, I don't (as Secretary of State Kerry suggests) believe that a deal 10 years in the making is a response to events in Ukraine. I think events in Ukraine resulted from Russia feeling really good about securing some economic security after 10 years of negotiating with the Chinese.
