The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special

I've read one essay about how wonderful it was and one essay about how betrayed a fan of the new show found herself feeling.
I quite enjoyed it save for two things:
1. Why does Companion Distress!Face have to be the impetus to finding another way? Especially the (to me) Mary Sue Perfect Companion?
2. As Christopher Eccleston is quite literally the man John Hurt's Doctor becomes, who thought it was a good idea NOT to drive increasingly large dump trucks full of money to his door to secure his participation? And if money/availability wasn't the issue and the man was purposefully left out for some other reason...what possible reason could that have been?
Bonus:
Billy Piper as the Moment. She knocked that out of the park.
PETER CAPALDI EYES.
One last kvetch:
Does this mean we need to renumber the new Doctors?
