Random links added to LJ entries

I ranted the other day about random advert links added to my LJ entries -- not so random, as it happens. Sometime in the past week, I received a Firefox update that added three extensions to my browser and rendered, like, two or three AVG functions incompatible (how convenient.)

As the links were starting to show up in other peoples' posts, I hovered over one, then googled "remove coupon companion." A few pages describing different symptoms popped, and it turns out that some extensions had been added to Mozilla Firefox, possibly with the last update.

If you have Firefox, go to the Tools menu, then Add-ons, then plugins to make sure you don't have anything harmless sounding like "browser companion." I did not, but it seems that's been a pop up bane of other user's existence. Under extensions, I found no fewer than three I never added, removed them all and then restarted Firefox. All links not added by yrs. very truly have now disappeared.

If you don't have Firefox, hover over the unwanted link, then look up "remove (insert name here)"

I had something similar happen on our computer at work. The problem was withsomething called "tab browser" (or somthing like that) which kept re-adding the programs i was deleting in add/delete. Once I figured that out, I went and deleted all the programs that were added that day. There were six or seven, allwith pretty innocuous names.

I just hope I got everything, then. Am keeping an eye out.
