I'm watching the first three eps of this season's Hawaii 5-0 and it's like they hired an all-slashaholic staff to write them.
"Our marriage is getting stale." (Danny to Steve, 2nd ep)
McGarrett as trouble magnet. (excerpted from a Danny-rant, 3rd ep)
"No one is gonna be man sushi." (Steve to Danny, 3rd ep)

Date: 2012-10-12 01:38 pm (UTC)I was having flashbacks to Burgi and Maggart in The Sentinel. Hard to believe we're not the target audience when Hollywood keeps this stuff coming decade after decade.
My favorite thing is the very strong feeling they don't (or wouldn't) care about the slash quotient. That awareness that people are going to see what they see and that being no reason to stop showing the bromance just warms the cockles of my little slasher heart.

Date: 2012-10-12 02:17 pm (UTC)I'm so glad we're past the days of "Ew, icky, we aren't writing gay characters, let's do everything in our power to keep them apart and stop this nonsense!" Though honestly, I think it's more about TPTB's attitude and most of them don't care what they have to do to generate more interest in their show, as long as you're watching. Now certain other TPTB were squicked beyond reason and felt that slashers were somehow "ruining" the show. No names mentioned. [ahem]

Date: 2012-10-12 04:31 pm (UTC)I'm not going to say it was a homophobic reaction at the time, because it happened when fanfic in general and slash in particular was becoming widely known and available thanks to the web. They had no frame of reference for how to deal with fans "reinterpreting" the characters and the show.
However, many of their comments in later years lead me to believe it was a pretty misogynistic and homophobic group of TPTB. Consider there was only one woman who ever directed an episode of SG-1, and that was because it was in Amanda Tapping's contract. Even so, they put her off until it was the last episode filmed of the season.
I'm keeping an eye on production credits for new shows, and if certain names appear, I'm going to skip it. I don't need the grief.

Date: 2012-10-12 01:46 pm (UTC)again)Second, what's the deal with tumblr? What separates it from Twitter, Facebook or LJ? I see lots of people turning up there, but don't understand taking on yet another avenue of social networking.

Date: 2012-10-12 02:27 pm (UTC)While LiveJournal is primarily text based social networking, with far more discussion (and fanfic!) possible than Facebook, Tumblr is much more visual. At least that's how fandom's using it.
There are lots of gif sets like the one I linked to, highlighting favorite scenes in shows and movies past and present. Some are dedicated to specific actors, posting pics from various photoshoots.
The biggest difference between how LiveJournal and Tumblr works is there's not an equivalent to communities on Tumblr. You'll see one with a name indicating it's for Hawaii 5-O, for example, but it's an individual who could abandon it at any time. Or they can change to another fandom and change their Tumblr name, while you're still following them, leaving you wondering why you're suddenly getting a lot of posts about something you have no interest in.
I have problem with the load time at home with so many images, and have to use a workaround at work because of filters I've asked twice to have removed, but if you've got a good connection, it's easy to skim through posts. Just scroll through to look at the pretties, and reblog to your own Tumblr as you see fit.

Another weird thing is that I get to blogs like Wil's faster through Google than through the Tumblr tag search. (shrug) Whatever, I'm there.

Date: 2012-10-12 04:05 pm (UTC)Tumblr search is not all that great. I searched out most of what I'm following by using Google Site Search. It's not really set up for the way fans normally interact, but we've adapted.
Bonus tip: If you want to reblog something without adding comments, just hold down ALT when you clig the reblog symbol.
