Not that I clearly recall. When Mom and I first moved to California (I was 6ish) our cats were indoor/outdoor, and I doubt either made it to age 5. I don't think either of them went missing prior to getting hit by cars, and all pets since have been indoor cats and well-fenced dogs. The cat taken by kidney failure at 12 and the dog gone from some sort of infection at age 8 were considered slackers, as all the rest made it to ages 15 to 20. Yes, outstanding vet care and high quality food both make a difference, but there is no substitute for keeping one's pet out of traffic and away from predators.

Date: 2011-01-17 03:07 am (UTC)Our second cat went missing right before Christmas the year I was ten. She was about six. We didn't think she ran away, but we couldn't find her anywhere. She showed up at the end of February, smelling like wood smoke, with a different collar (her original collar had had identification tags on it). We decided that someone must have taken her and kept her inside, and when she finally escaped, she came straight home. She lived to be 20, and never ran away (or disappeared) again.
