How Six Apart's Greed Allied Them With Neo-Nazis

by [livejournal.com profile] stewardess, link snaffled from [livejournal.com profile] seperis

Also, I am extra sleepless cranky today.

eta: due to a distributed denial of service, LJ is dysfunctional today. [livejournal.com profile] stewardess has an expanded version with links at:

How Six Apart's Greed Allied Them With Neo-Nazis, GreatestJournal version

Now everything becomes clear. As this is the closest we're going to get to a proper 'explaination' of events (unless the person who works for them weighs in) it sounds 'right'.

It also sounds like it's a catch 22 either which way. 6A might be thinking of their stock options, but as the whole Fanlib FUBAR has shown... you p*ss off your market, you kiss goodbye your cash cows.

Intersting - will highlight for the rest of my flist - apologies in advance;)

A-ha!

And that's what happens when management doesn't talk to the people actually doing the work. If someone had just made one little phone call, none of this would have happened.

Karma. Not looking so good for those wanna-be billionaires at the moment, is it? They may have to settle for being only millionaires.

Hey, if I didn't want it shared

...I'd flock it or say something dumb, like "do not share, even though it is thought provoking and probably very informative."

In a members only mailing list, I can half-understand the etiquette of not sharing what goes on with non-subscribers. On a public post in journaling community? I've never understood the cramps people get from being linked.

There's more detail in the Greatest Journal version. My kneejerk reaction after actually seeing some of her sources was...kneejerk, but sticking to non-squicky sources of information is not useful in all cases. While a quick skim of the suspended guy's Google cached user info page repulsed me, his letter to LJ on his Greatest Journal outlining his experiences with their policy was...enlightening.

I can now picture the millionaire billionaire-wannabes giving each other tragic looks, slapping each other's asses and saying "Ya gotta play hurt! Go long!" or whatever sports metaphor is seasonal.

[livejournal.com profile] seperis has a very long post of many parts, whence this link came, that also includes some links to [livejournal.com profile] twisted_chick doing some very interesting computations on what percentage of Six Apart/LJ's revenue derives in some way from fannish activities.

[pause] a HA...linkage:

[you may link], with the provision that you point out that all the numbers are guesses. We don't know what Six Apart means by 'active' journals, we don't know how many of them are individuals as opposed to communities -- that would be an important distinction -- and we don't know the actual percentage of paid journals throughout LJ as a whole because they've stopped telling us that.
