Decent sum-up of the wank that went directly over my head last week:

Link to Fandom_Wank on Racism in SGA fandom, or possibly Batshit Asshattery in SGA Fandom, you be the judge

At least, I think it's a decent sum up. Anyone still reading this LJ should feel free to provide better links in comments.

How shallow am I that my biggest worry is the unbelievable avalanche of badfic that will no doubt ensue as fanwriters attempt to prove they're not by-God racist? Fanwriters with no prior interest in the allegedly demeaned characters whatsoever, who will now crank out the least-probable AUs casting them in ...well, whatever the fanwriter in question thinks proves themselves paragons of tolerance and broadmindedness?

Given that I read SGA fanfiction pretty much for the smut, I'm quite comfortable with however shallow this makes me, kthnx. I'm just trying to get a guessimate here.

Sorry, but I have to eyeroll over people basically saying "you have to write certain characters this way, or else you're racist." Please. The show dynamics are just as bad as anything a fanfic writer can crank out, but they seem to be missing that point. Perhaps it doesn't click until the character are out of the accepted roles on the show?

Thankfully, I didn't see the wank directly. I've heard doing so will turn you into stone or something. I'd much rather get back to Pornsville, kthnx.

Yeah, I saw that on f_w. Much batshit there.

One more reason I love the SPN fandom - whenever there's a wank, people just churn out porn. *G*

I'm so with you on this one.

I feel so bad for the original author. She handled the initial response with so much class, yet massive wank still ensued on all sides.

I do think that there will be a lot of authors who end up writing characters in the now 'acceptable' roles to try and earn their street cred.

I have to say that this makes me a happy puppy that I'm not really in SGA.

Looking directly at it made my jaw go slack and my suspension of disbelief turn to stone. Does that count? ;)

I admit that I haven't dug deeply enough to figure out who the original target is. Enough of my favorites have caught the tarry brush that I'm just numbly appalled.

Sadly she was a first-time writer for the fandom and actually wrote a good AU. A lot of it was kicked off by folks getting their panties in a bind and choosing this particular fic as the sacrificial lamb.

I think if the discussion had taken place outside the context of that fic a lot of it would be going soooo differently right now.

fandom_wank was suspended on livejournal a long time ago. You need to head over to journalfen (the above link is correct) to see it. Unfortunately journalfen is still in the middle of server problems and it's currently down for the moment.

I read this wank last night. I may not be in the SGA fandom, but man. MAN. Wow. It's a good thing you're just in it for the smut, but it's sad that all of this is going down. Sort of ruins the fun of fandom.

It was pretty intense. Since I'm not in the SGA fandom and because I felt it wouldn't get me relied as much because of that, I went to go read the wank. Plus, I needed a distraction.

And WOW. It was pretty insane. It sent me to an uncomfortable place and not a good uncomfortable. But from an anthropological perspective, it was fascinating.

Personally, I have more problems with how the show is done over what fanfic writers do. Because, geez, fandom is supposed to fun and all.

If you're the curious type, it's definitely a good read to see just how crazy fandom can get, once it's back up again. I was particularly struck by the argument that if you cast a person of color as a barista, then you are racist because baristas are low class jobs with little respect. That then caused all the people who worked as baristas to cry classism and that they didn't appreciate being told they worked a demeaning type job.

The actual author herself? Major class. I think she had the best simple and curt response free of wank I have ever read from any author, fanfic or professional.

And word to the "pretty insane." People just lost their grip completely, as far as I can tell, and not all of them (or even very many of them) appeared to be net newbies from the bits I skimmed.

I figure every netizen gets a free pass on wank when they're new, or maybe if the wank is personal on themselves, but once we've all been through a flamewar? Really no excuse for grip-losing.

Getting all worked up about the latest wank in a blog? Accomplishes exactly nothing, unless providing a severe chilling effect on what gets fic posted in the near term is an "accomplishment."

Looks like ami got my back after my bedtime.

The link now clicks from my computer. If it's still giving you grief, I can e-mail you some summaries once I get back from the bead show circuit. They're having two in Cobb County today! Bead heaven.

She may be new to SGA fandom, but that degree of calm indicates she's not new to kerfluffles. She was practically steely in not rising to the bait, bless her.

Well, if you don't mind being opressed by the alcoholic pedophiles who keep shoving consensual incest between fictional brothers down your throat, it's a great fandom.

(Alas, we used to be so wank-free. Now every week it's 'wincest is wrong' and 'you're raping canon!' and my personal favorite, 'Jensen Ackles is a cokehead!' *consoles self with porn*)

People really don't think very hard before they post, do they? I finally got to the story on SGA Fortune Cookie (a comm of which I was previously ignorant) and saw the initial comments that started the wank. Some people need ten deep breaths before they post, others need about a million, apparently.

I just read the entire original wank, and from what I can tell, person #1 said "You're racist," person #2 said, "You're rude," person #3 said, "Why can't the author defend herself, and stop calling person #1 rude!"

The funny thing is, as with all wank, I guess... person #1 and the author both disappeared early on. Person #3 didn't like people defending the author, but was the only one defending person #2, and...

My head hurts.

Mine, too.

I slipped into my [livejournal.com profile] orange852 personality and larked off to a bead show. Results are posted to that LJ. :D

I sense a great deal of my day would otherwise have been wasted sitting around in slack-jawed disbelief as the wank trainwreck (wankwreck?) unfolded.

Since the show is a work of fiction set in some very weird circumstances, I believe I'd limit myself to "incest (in any form) doesn't float my boat" and "if any canon can take care of itself after dark in a back alley, haunted or otherwise, it's this one," and "well, I'm a diet Cokehead, so it's not as if I can throw stones."

:D How would I do?

I read the original kerfuffle and backed away rapidly when things went insane. The orginal author showed total class, [livejournal.com profile] liveiapenn made some good points that are now lost. I'm only in it for the McShep (and the occasional Ronon/Sheppard), so I'll join you at the shallow end of the pool.

Shallow is good.

Has the Fortune Cookie comm been around long? I knew we had some off-the-wall communities in SGA fandom, but that's a new one on me. I'm having a hard time connecting angsty AUs with fortune cookies, for some reason.
