Or, Guess Who's Been Reading Up a Bit on the Latest Wank?

Automatic renewal of this journal's paid status has been turned off.

Why?

Wikipedia on Strikethrough Controversy

As of July 29, unless there has been some sort of turnaround in LJ's attitude (i.e., they don't delete hundreds of journals without at least skimming actual content) I'm taking that as a sign that grownups aren't wanted here and will find some other blog to post it.

There I am

Befriend me at will, cap'ns.

Also...I've seen lots of chatter about backing up livejournals. Is there a way to do that and import them into Greatestjournal?

Deletions occurred yesterday.

LJ troops are still working on a post to the news comm.

An individual identifying themselves on metafilter as anildash is responding to IMs under "anildash" on Jabber, and gave me the following contact information:

anil@sixapart.com
646-541-5843

I am not making this up. That is a telephone number. Anildash actually spent quite some time on Jabber expressing how upset LJ people are, how the policies have been "evolving rapidly," lots of people were out of the office over the holiday weekend and that, had any of this been under his or her control, it would never have happened.

I had jumped on to advise that my paid accounts are no longer on automatic and that I'd be going to greatestjournal for my future journaling needs and that three people have been fired from my organization in the last six months for "human error," that talking to CNET before the users was really bad form, not talking to each other wasn't all that well thought out and that it's sort of a problem when things like this are beyond the control of the only people who seem to care.

Anildash just took all this, then gave me that e-mail address and phone number and asked me to make sure everyone I talked to knew that LJ staffers know they screwed up, really want to make this right and could I let her get back to the news post really quick? (I think Anildash is female based on communication style, but it would be rude to assume)

Anyway, current rumor has it that there's going to be an update to the news comm soon.

I wished Anildash luck with that.

The [livejournal.com profile] news post already has 5003 comments, so I shall have to respond here.

I can't stop thinking about three former employees of my organization fired in the last few months for what amounts not just to human error, but actions that "everyone" took...until the company went to a zero-tolerance policy for certain types of mistakes.

Every. Single. One. of those fired employees did basically the same thing: made an improperly documented, subscriber-affecting change to the system without notifying any affected party, then walked away somewhere unreachable for just a few hours. Not one remained incommunicado for time measured in days. Still, nothing that hadn't been done before, nothing with malicious intent behind it...pure human error.

Wow. Where have we seen that before?

I can't help but think of any number of "de-friendings" that occur every time there's a wank over one thing or another under the principle of "fine, you have a right to your opinion, but I can't be associated with you any more because your opionion is messed up."

So...I guess it's semantics, but do we fire or de-friend LJ for their screw up?

My post to the latest on [livejournal.com profile] news :

It's just that this is pretty much your third strike, you know? The introduction of ad service, "Nipplegate" and now Strikeout '07. All three incidents have been characterized by breath-takingly poor customer service and ham-handed communications.

The automatic renewal of my membership has been cancelled on both my livejournals. The execrably poor business practices displayed by 6a/LJ prompt me to deny any further revenue to your organization.

In all sober seriousness, I believe that the minimum response by livejournal users who care about good business practice should be to reduce their account status to Basic as soon as possible. (owing to the "no refunds" policy, my accounts will show as "paid" through July 19.)

For lj users who care about that freedom of expression thing, taking our show on the road to, for example, Greatestjournal, which supplies 2000 icons with a free account is the appropriate action.
